France - Belle-ile nightscapes and travel photography workshop Workshop

Belle - ile is the largest of the Breton Islands, off the North West coast of France where you can walk along the quays with their colourful houses, stroll around the port and the streets in the old town and explore the Vauban citadel.

This five day workshop combines the best of travel photography with four astrophotography workshops. We have chosen the dates to combine the new moon with the location to teach you all about getting great photos of the stars at night.

What you can expect...
The workshop will be run by local photographer and astro photography specialist, Serge Riou and British travel photographer and photo tour leader, Suzanne Porter, who lives in France. The workshops will be run in both English and French with both photographers being fluent in the two languages!

During the day we will...
* visit the island on travel photography missions, seeking out stunning stand alone photos and local stories for a reportage project
* get great travel photos. You will learn how to approach people to get natural portraiture, find a story and tell it with photos, use lighting and composition to enhance your photography and all the general techniques to produce award winning travel shots

During the night we will...
* teach you how to plan a night shoot with all of its constraints, the most important things to be aware of and the software aids to enable the smooth transition from an idea to a photo.
* What equipment ? We will review the different cameras, which lenses, the tripod, the remote control... etc. But also what to bring besides the photo equipment.
* Learn how to configure your camera for shooting the stars at night
* shooting: focusing at night, light management, use of filters, hyperfocal length, rule of 500, the different ways to shoot.

The morning after we will...
* Answer questions and clarify points following the night shooting.
* teach you how to process images
* provide a pdf summary of the different points discussed during these 5 days
* For those who want to go further, Serge specialises in panoramic photography and can answer any questions about that.

Serge will remain available after the course to ensure a "nightscape service" and provide additional help and advice.

NB: You will have the option to shoot all four nights with Serge during the workshop. However, nothing is compulsory and you may prefer to do one or two and get more sleep!

The programme
We meet on Saturday 24th September on the island of Belle-ile off the West coast of Brittany. That evening, we share a meal together, to get to know each other and people can rest after the trip. Accommodation is in a shared gite.

Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday: shooting. We will have editing workshops and exercises so a personal laptop is recommended.

Thursday departure from the island.

Lodging is in a catered communal gite in Bangor with the choice of a shared or private bedroom. There will be one night when we eat in a local Breton crêperie. Food will be at disposition to make picnic lunches.

We work with small groups of minimum 3 people. Maximum 6.

Belle-île est la plus grande des îles du ponant, elle se situe au large de la côte sud bretonne.
En arrivant par ferry, à Le Palais, vous pourrez vous promener le long des quais avec leurs maisons colorées, flâner dans le port et les rues de la vieille ville ou encore explorer la citadelle Vauban.

Ce stage de cinq jours combine le meilleur de la photographie de voyage avec quatre ateliers d'astrophotographie. Nous avons choisi les dates pour profiter de la nouvelle lune et vous apprendre tout ce qu'il faut savoir sur la façon de prendre de superbes photos de ciels étoilés.
En outre la période, printanière, vous permettra de profiter de paysages côtiers magnifiques.

Les photographes :
En journée Suzanne Porter, photographe anglaise de voyage et organisatrice de voyages photo, résidant en France, vous emmènera à la découverte de l’île.
De nuit, l'atelier nocturne sera animé par Serge Riou, photographe local et spécialiste de « nightscape ».
Les ateliers se dérouleront en anglais et en français, les deux photographes étant bilingues.

Pendant la journée :
* Nous visiterons l'île en mission de photographie de voyage, à la recherche de superbes clichés et d'histoires locales pour un projet de reportage.
* Obtenez de superbes photos de voyage. Vous apprendrez à approcher les gens pour obtenir un portrait naturel, à trouver une histoire et à la raconter en photos, à utiliser l'éclairage et la composition pour améliorer votre photographie et toutes les techniques générales pour produire des photos de voyage originales.

Pendant la nuit :
* Nous étudierons la planification de la prise de vue nocturne avec ses contraintes propres, les points à prendre en compte et les aides logicielles pour glisser d'une idée à une photo.
* Quel matériel ? On passera en revue ici les différents boitiers, les objectifs, le trépied, la télécommande... etc. Mais aussi ce qu'il faut prévoir en dehors du matériel photo.
* Nous vous apprendrons à configurer votre appareil pour la prise de vue nocturne et gérer la mise au point la nuit, la lumière, l’utilisation de filtres, l’hyperfocale, la règle des 500... etc.

Le lendemain matin :
* Nous répondrons aux questions, à la suite des sessions photos de la veille (reportage et nightscape).
* Nous verrons ensemble le traitement des images.
* Si vous voulez aller plus loin, Serge est également spécialiste de la photo panoramique et peut répondre à vos questions sur le sujet.

Serge fournira un récapitulatif PDF des différents points aborder pendant les prises de vues nocturnes. Il restera joignable après le stage pour répondre à vos questions et assurer un "SAV nightscape".

NB : Vous aurez la possibilité de photographier les quatre nuits avec Serge pendant le stage. Cependant, rien n'est obligatoire et vous préférerez peut-être n’en faire qu’une ou deux et dormir davantage !

Le programme
Nous nous retrouvons le samedi 22 avril sur Belle-île.
Le soir même nous partagerons un repas ensemble, ce qui nous donnera l’occasion de faire connaissance. Les sessions nocturnes ne commenceront que le lendemain afin que les gens puissent se reposer après le voyage.

Dimanche, lundi, mardi, mercredi : prise de vue. Nous aurons des ateliers et des exercices de traitement d’image, il est donc recommandé d'apporter un ordinateur portable personnel.

Départ de l'île le jeudi 27 avril.

L'hébergement se fait dans un gîte à Sauzon, avec le choix d'une chambre partagée ou privée.
La nourriture sera à disposition pour faire des pique-niques.
Nous prévoyons de manger un soir dans une crêperie bretonne locale.

Nous travaillons avec de petits groupes de 3 à 6 personnes.
